The legislature of the US state of Tennessee has recently passed a bill. This would allow teachers and staff in the state to carry handguns in schools.
The bill passed the Republican-controlled Tennessee Legislature by a 68-28 vote. Protesters then protested from the gallery. The state Senate approved the legislation earlier this month.
Since last year’s shooting at a Nashville school that left three children and three staff members dead, gun restrictions have been hotly debated in Tennessee. Some Democrats in the House helped stage protests inside the Capitol that led to his ouster from the Legislature last year.
Now the bill has reignited the debate over armed teachers, as mass shootings occur not only in American schools, but also at parades, festivals and elsewhere.
